Last time we asked you for the songs that take you back to a particular time or event and opened a grab bag of fun, romance and more.
Readers Carol, Debbie S., Karen, Sadie L. and several others shared my love for disco – and the 70’s!
Disco was my era. Being away at college living in the dorm or in my apt for one spring session, disco was the best. We’d go to the bar, Thurs nites started the weekend, & dance dance dance. Or I remember the guy across the hall would blast songs by The Babies. I’d go back to college days sooner than high school.
-Carol
Like it Live
Reader Daniel recalled his time at the Fillmore East (“Bloomfield & Kooper, Jefferson Airplane, Santana….”) and Reader Joy went all out more recently.
Just stepped off StarVista Malt Shop cruise. Hearing Little Anthony sing Hurt So Bad, followed by the Frank Sinatra song It Was A Very Good Year, blew me away. I walked out of that show with tears in my eyes, also now as I am writing this. Must be stirring up a lot of memories. So many great shows and artists this week from our earlier years!
-Joy
Moments in Time
Reader Gail F. summons a potent memory and reminds us of the joys of the car radio.
I loved listening to ‘Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum in the late 60’s on the car radio. I was 12 or 13 years old and my mother would drive home after a long summer’s day at the beach…
…And Reader Jay G. shares an extra special song and memory.
10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” from 1975. I was 15 years old and had an AM radio on my bike and this song was a huge hit that summer. I heard it every day and night as I rode my bike to my girlfriend’s home. I married that beautiful girl and 50 years later we still listen to the song together!
Magic Moments
A ‘back in time’ song for me would be Misty by Johnny Mathis. In early courtship with my husband, this became ‘our song’, and we spent many dates dancing to this song…very danceable and romantic…59 years and still going!
-Karen
Isn’t it interesting how songs trigger those forgotten memories?! The group Lobo was popular when my husband and I were dating. We loved their music and would sing at the top of our lungs. One song, Me and You and a Dog Named Boo, was our favorite, talking about traveling with a dog named Boo. We always said when we retired, we’d follow that lead and we are. We enjoy winters down south and we have a new pup named Boo! Also, You Light Up My Life by Debby Boone, sung at our wedding.
-Debbie
Maybe this reader summed it up best.
“Those Were the Days My Friends.”
-Lisa
ORIGINAL COLUMN:
I’ve been in the throes of restarting my stereo (and isn’t it wild how vinyl is making a comeback?).
I’ve got a bunch of reasons. I’m losing my hearing, so I want to listen to as much as I can while I”m still able. I’m also aware that the stereo is a big investment that’s not being used because the cables and hookups are intimidating. (My late husband was the audiophile.)
And most of all, I want to curate my music to suit my unique tastes. Music, is a sort of time machine, isn’t it? There are songs that take me back, instantly, to a different time.
Love and Marriage
“Ballerina” by Van Morrison takes me to a special date with my late husband. (Frankly, that whole album!) When I was engaged, I listened to “Let’s Get Married” by Al Green every day. It took me a long time to be able to listen to both of these but I still do, and I remember.
Fun with Friends
I admit it – I was a disco fan when I was younger (in nightclubs I liked to dance near the speakers, and I’m paying for that now, but whatever). I had many, many nights out dancing in clubs with my very best friend, John. It took a long time to get over his death when AIDS claimed him, but there are two songs and groups that take me right back to the dance floor with him: First, the SOS Band and this song.
and Shalimar. I love the bass line in this song.
The first time I rediscovered these songs online, about 25 years later, and played them on my PC….I got chills and the hair raised on my arm.
YOUR TURN
I could go on and on…but how about you? What songs are your Wayback Machine, that bring you to a certain event or time? Let us know in the comments!

Anything by stop! I had the opportunity to do some charity work for a radio station in 2000 and got to party with them! I was on top of the world that night!

I loved listening to ‘Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum in the late 60’s on the car radio. I was 12 or 13 years old and my mother would drive home after a long summer’s day at the beach. I liked the happy morbid quality of this gospel tune, especially as I had my whole life in front of me at the time.
I’ll never forget the songbird, Minnie Ripperton and her song “Lovin’ You”. My school chums and I loved that song. I liked the Commodores, Prince, Kenny Rogers. My mother brought me some old days songs (before my time but I loved the music)–The Monkeys, Ruby and the Romantics (“Hey there lonely boy . . .”), and Nina Simone singing, “Here Comes the Sun.” I danced heartily to Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody”. Gladys Night and the Pips were tops. I could go on and on.
I think the 70’s was the best decade for music–so many great songs, a few favorites–
Barry White “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love”, Don McLean “American Pie” (everyone tried to figure out the meaning of the lyrics), The Commodores-“Easy”
“Age of Aquarius” always gave me a lift. Loved the 5th Dimension. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. are still married today , 56 years later. Loved her singing “One Less Bell to Answer.”
“One less bell to answer . . . one less egg to fry.” What a song!
Loved that tune also… those lyrics!

A song that brings back a moment in time for me is Tiny Dancer by Elton John. My best friend and I were in her Mom’s Impala on the way home from seeing Freebie and the Bean. I don’t remember was in the movie or not.
That’s my fave as well, Kim! Instant flashback.
Jazz & Blues, spent a lot of time at Filmore East – Bloomfield & Kooper, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Simon & Garfunkel, Don Ellis, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Dave Coltrane, Creme, Dire Straits, Clapton
Virge, so many songs…the soundtrack of my life is so full. However, one does stand out for me. 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” from 1975. I was 15 years old and had an AM radio on my bike and this song was a huge hit that summer. I heard it every day and night as I rode my bike to my girlfriend’s home. I loved the romantic ballads of the 70’s & 80’s like How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (Al Green 1972), Natural High (Bloodstone 1972), and If This World Were Mine (Luther Vandross 1982). But if I had to pick just one, it would be For the Love of You (Isley Brothers 1975). Simply beautiful!
Motown, Beachboys, Beatles
I have to say, my disco years were all about the Bee Gees–I loved their disco sound, but liked their early music better.
A ‘back in time’ song for me would be Misty by Johnny Mathis. In early courtship with my husband, this became ‘our song’, and we spent many dates dancing to this song…very danceable and romantic…
What makes me melancholy is riding down the road on a beautiful day with my hubby, listening to the oldies… lots of memories…59 years and still going!
I remember when disco was the thing! We attended a dance party and the host had hired a dance instructor to teach all of us! I don’t think we did all that well learning it, but it certainly was fun!
In 1973 I had just started dating a fellow law student. We danced to ” Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Shortly thereafter I went to Denmark for a month. I was amazed to hear that song being played over and over again on local radio stations and I kept thinking and thinking about him. Fifty-two years later we still were together and dancing to “our” song.
Just today, Alexis found “ I would like to get to know you” on radio. I think it was by the 5th Dimension. Uplifting and joyful.
Spanky and Our Gang…
For me, I think of my Rick Nelson records. I would buy his records as they were released; 45’s and/or LP’s.
Ellen:
Glad to find someone who liked Ricky Nelson as much as I did! When all of my friends were into Elvis, I was into Ricky! Do you still have your 45s and LPs? My 45s–which I still have–are Believe What You Say and Bebop Baby. The only LP that I still have of his is Ricky Sings Again from 1959. I was heartbroken when he died in a plane crash in the 80s.
Hi Karen,
Yes, I have the complete collection of 45 singles and LP’s but have been slow to finish the 45 eps collection. I play guitar because Rick was my earliest rock influence. Also, I was at Madison Square Garden for the rock ‘n roll revival concert which stimulated Rick to write, “Garden Party.” May he rest in peace.
Hwy 61 Revisited Bob Dylan. Dylan goes electric and Al Kooper’s iconic organ riffs. Music changed for good.
The Band – Music From The Big Pink. The beginning of Americana music.
Laura Nyro with LaBelle -Gonna Take a Miracle. The major influence on Elton John and Leon Russell piano playing and performance.
Joni Mitchell- Hejeira. Where Joni’s brilliance converged with all her influences. I consider this lp her masterpiece.
What great milestone albums! I also think that Joni’s Hejeira was incredible, and still listen to it all these years later.
Thank you for the song memories. My daddy’s favorite Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White takes me back to sitting on the couch with him and my mommy’s favorite from Camelot show how different they were but comforting each in their own way.
Peaches and Herb
Al Jareau
“Just My Imagination” by The Temptations…Juniors in high school, T and I are cruising the streets of San Francisco in the spring of 1971.
WOW great topic!!!!!
For me it has to be the song “Love Shack” OMG us gals used to have some much fun dancing to this song! always was so much fun :)
